Already I have learned a lot about running a business.
It has been a labor of love for the both of them. For most of their lives my aunt and mother have been working with herbs. Since my great grandfather was showing them wild crafting to the two successful businesses they now own, my mothers have put all their energy into what they love.
From 7 a.m. to Heaven-knows-when both my aunt and mother are constantly updating blogs, Facebook pages, and filling orders. They do this because it’s what they love. They have been driven to become authoritative voices in their field and have done just that.
But they do have fun.
Even though owning a successful business is a massive amount of work, it doesn’t mean being miserable. The conversations they have, ideas they give, and opinions (even outside their field) have been thoughtful, often funny, and always inspiring. There are moments where I have to take their advice with a grain of salt, but I know it is a good idea to listen no matter what.
And I think that’s the trick.
Starting a business is not just about turning a profit; it’s about creating a service or product that you can be proud of. Earlier today my mother and aunt agreed that starting a business is not about being rich, but about making a living doing something you love. They (and now I!) get to go to work everyday knowing they will be proud of what they’ve done. And I’m glad to be a part of that.
